Top Five Naperville Wedding Venues

As a makeup artist, I spend a significant amount of time each spring and summer going into and hotel of carious wedding venues. To help brides in those initial planning stages, I’ve made a list of my Top Five wedding venues in Naperville. Although some of these are not technically in Naperville, they are comfortable close.

Top 5 Naperville Wedding Venues

1. Morton Arboretum : Lisle, IL

Founder’s Room Morton Arboretum

Nestled in the far western suburb of Lisle is the Morton Arboretum. Within the 1700 acres of trees sits the former home of the Morton family (of Morton’s Salt fame). One of the most popular sites in the historic mansion for indoor weddings is the mansion’s former library, called the Founder’s Room. The stained glass and wood paneling retain the character of the original space but still feel inviting. Many brides chose to have their pictures taken outside because of the wide array of garden spaces.
In-house planning and catering can save brides some additional time and headache. The space has plans for small intimate wedding all the way to large formal affairs with full bar service.
The Morton Arboretum rates can be a bit higher than other options in the area, but provides amenities like full service planning, free parking, and security that may cost much more somewhere else.

2. Signature Events at Seven Bridges: Woodridge/Lisle IL

Monterey Garden Terrace at Signature Events at Seven Bridges

With 35,000 square feet of special event space, Signature Events at Seven Bridges is arguable the most flexible option in the western suburbs; a brilliant solution for those who want a single site for both reception and ceremony. Brides with larger guest lists ill also appreciate the flexibility of the spaces.
Signature Events has a small garden area for intimate ceremonies. Although chairs can be arranged for slightly larger groups, I’d recommend taking things inside if you have that many people. The inside space is flexible and can be suited to a number of color schemes. It’s important to note that the venue already has a bit of a Hollywood theme in place. On the walls you will find black and white pictures for 30s and 40s era films. It’s not a deal breaker and in fact could be the start of a great reception theme.

Meson Sabika is a wedding venue on many a bride’s radar. It’s well known for being one of the most elegant reception locations in suburban Chicago. Not only does the mansion have a beautiful indoor reception area, they also offer a covered Pavilion space that looks amazing at night. On the grounds, there are numerous places for smaller more intimates weddings. Another great thing about this Naperville wedding venue is that there are so many amazing places for pictures. Meson Sabika provides a country club feeling at a more moderate cost.
The folks at Meson Sabika have created a simplified menu for brides who don’t want to deal with the headache of planning every details of every course. The simplified menu runs around $40 pp.

4. Naper Settlement : Century Memorial Chapel, Naperville, IL

The Century Memorial Chapel at the Naperville Settlement is stunning. I realize that’s a word that gets a workout of bridal blogs, but it’s the word that fits. The Chapel is an 1864 Gothic Revival structure built by New England settlers who came to the Midwest. The chapel can accommodate up to 200 guests. The quiet façade is ideal for wedding pictures and reminds me a little of the wedding pictures of JFK Jr.
Taking ones vows in such and old and beautiful place can add a sense of history to your wedding day.
Reception options are a bit informal and may not be a good fit for everyone. This may be one of those venues best suited for a reception in a second location.

5. Arista Hotel

Hotel Arista Reception Area

For brides looking to exchange vows in an elegant contemporary environment, I can think of no better place in the Naperville area than the Arista Hotel. The Arista can accommodate parties of all sizes in their 4 different private spaces. Packages include high-end options like cocktail hours and late-night snacks. Menu offerings may be a little high-brow for some. The entire Naperville wedding venue has a very polished high-end urban feeling. From the inside you’d never guess you were in Naperville.

Thinking about Boudoir Photos?

Boudoir photography is a growing trend in the Chicago area. Although most clients are brides, women from all walks of life are posing for sexy, suggestive photos. Chicago boudoir photography can range from mild to wild, depending on the personality of the subject. Although most of these photos are given as engagement, weddings, or Valentine’s Day gifts many are done for personal gratification. Boudoir shoots can be a glamorous way to celebrate a weight loss, divorce, or even plastic surgery. As one client recently said “When I’m 85 years old, I’ll be able to look back and see what a hottie I was!”

Boudoir Makeup Naperville

Here are some frequently asked questions about boudoir photos.

Do I need modeling experience?

No. Most boudoir clients are brides are regular women who have never modeled before. You don’t have to be model perfect to have a great shoot. Most boudoir clients are brides are regular women who have never modeled before. Women of any age and size can have amazing boudoir photos. I tell all my boudoir clients here in Naperville that “Nervous is Normal.”

A good rapport with the photographer, great hair and makeup, and a little wine can work together to create AMAZING results. The sexiest thing you can do in your boudoir photoshoot is RELAX. An experienced photographer will know exactly how to help you pose to make your photos look beautiful. Another reason not to worry – PHOTOSHOP!! Thanks to modern technology no one ever needs worry about stretch marks, cellulite or knee fat ruining a photo!

How do I find a boudoir photographer ?

If you’ve already booked your bridal photographer ask if he or she does boudoir photography also. Many offer the service but don’t publicize it. Check with any friends who may have had similar photos taken. Referrals or existing relationships are always the best place to start.

The Internet can be a great research tool. When you are looking for photographers, take note of the types of images you see. Are they great photos or just okay photos of half-naked women? Are there any testimonials? What other kinds of photography do they do? Compare images between sites. One set of images may look great until compared with the next website. Hit Yelp and look for reviews.

The MOST important thing is that you are completely comfortable with the photographer. You’re going to be spending a couple of hours in your underwear with this person. You need to relax (as much as possible).

What should I wear?

Wear whatever makes you feel sexy. Seriously. It’s that simple. Don’t wear what you THINK is sexy or what you think OTHERS will think is sexy. If you feel sexiest in one of your husband’s shirts…wear it. If vintage wiggle dresses make you feel like a goddess, wear one. Boudoir staples like, heels, thigh-his, pearls, and corsets work for most people.

If you’re giving the album as a gift, consider wearing something related to the hobbies, interests, or occupation of the recipient. We’ve seen loads of women do super sexy shoots in camouflage jackets, cowboy hats, business suits, sports jerseys ( HUGE here in Chicago). Consider shooting in the classic pin-up style. Think back-seamed hose, crinolines, vintage dresses, cute props, and cheesecake poses.

When should I schedule the session?

If you’re doing this as a wedding gift, a few weeks before the wedding will give the photographer time to edit the photos and create any photo gifts like calendars or albums. It’s also a nice treat for brides to get some pampering in the hectic weeks leading to the wedding

What should I do to get ready for my shoot?

  • Have a light meal. The temptation will be not to eat so you can look thinner in the photos. Bad idea. A blood sugar crash in the middle of your shoot will not enhance your sexy.
  • Do some stretches. You will be asked to pose in ways likely to be uncomfortable. Some of the most gorgeous poses are also the least comfortable.
  • Hair and Makeup. The point of the shoot is to feel sexy. Having your hair and makeup done professionally will make you feel more confident. A beauty pro will know exactly the right products to uses, and the right amount of makeup you need to get the look you want. Glamour hair and false lashes may seem extreme but believe me…when you see the pictures, it will be TOTALLY worth it.
  • Look at other boudoir images. Don’t be too specific about what poses you like but do make a few notes of poses, lighting or setting that strongly interest you.

What to expect ?

Whether you’re shooting in a studio, hotel, or your home the expectations are similar.

While your hair stylist and makeup artist get you looking your best, the photographer may take some time to do initial set up of lighting. You’ll get into your first outfit. Once you’re dressed, the photographer will give you posing directions. If you have never done any modeling, you may feel silly and awkward. Work through it. It will be worth it. The length of the session will depend on the package you’ve chosen. The typical session runs about 2 hours in length. Estimate one hour for hair/makeup and a second for the actual photography.

What does it cost?

Costs can range widely. Rates depend on the location, the number of wardrobe changes, and the length of the shoot. Inclusion of wardrobe, hair, and makeup can also change costs. In Chicago, boudoir shoot prices can range from $300-800.

Tips for working with your bridal makeup artist

One of my biggest challenges as a bridal makeup artist here in Chicago is trying to pin down exactly the look of bride is going for. The problem is that words like flawless, natural, and smoky are completely subjective. What looks natural to one person will appear tawdry to another. The best way I’ve found to simplify things for everyone is by using pictures during a consultation. This allows brides to share looks that mirror their vision of their perfect bridal look. Here are some tips for working with a makeup artist.

1. Be specific. Nearly every bride says they want to look natural or they want to look like themselves. These terms won’t be helpful in trying to coordinate with your artist. Instead, discuss what features you like best about yourself and which features you would prefer to minimize. When you are sharing pictures with your artist, instead of presenting a picture of the perfect bride and saying “I want to look just like her” figure out ahead of time what things about that image you really like.

2. Be realistic. A colleague recently shared a story about a situation that happens often. A bride in her forties brought in a picture of Emma Watson in a recent ad campaign for the product line. The bride wanted her makeup to look exactly like the picture. There is no amount a makeup, regardless of the price of it that will make a fortysomething, chain- smoking grandmother look like a pampered, wealthy twenty-something actress and model. Makeup can’t change the laws of physics.

3. Be inspired. Look outside bridal magazines for your inspiration. You may find the perfect look in a Home Depot ad. Look at pictures from different eras. You may find that the perfect makeup style for you is from the 40s or the 70s. Movies are another source of inspiration. You don’t have to look like every other bride. Take your lip color inspiration from your bridesmaids’ bouquets. Do a smoky eye if it suits you. Having said that, be careful not to confused inspiration with jumping on bandwagons. After Kim Kardashians “wedding” EVERYONE wanted her bridal look, everyone feels a little silly.

4. Be honest. There are beauty concepts and products that just don’t suit everyone. For example, I despise that shimmery inner corner look. If there are things like these that really bother you, share those with your makeup artist before your trial. Don’t wait until he or she has burned up half of your consultation appointment doing a look that you will hate.

5. Be open-minded. A professional makeup artist will do your makeup much differently than the way you do it at home. He or she is probably going to apply more product than you’re used to. Many artists use product brands sold exclusively in professional makeup shops and may not be known to you. In order to get the most out of your time with the professional state those few things that you really deeply dislike and stay flexible about the rest. I can’t tell you how many times brides have insisted that they couldn’t wear use a particular shade and in the end they loved it.

2. Venuti’s

Venutis Chicago

Venuti’s can handle any size celebration. The spaces can be configured for up to 1000 guests.  There is a small chapel on-site so you can have ceremony and reception in the same location. The comfortable bridal suites are the ideal place to dress for wedding or reception. My favorite thing about this place…the STAIRCASE… You will feel like royalty descending that amazing marble staircase. A fairytale for sure.

3. Café Brauer at Lincoln Park Zoo
cafe brauer Lincoln Park Zoo

This location has a beautiful vintage feel that has made it a favorite of Chicagoland brides. It offers a combination of indoor and outdoor options. This makes it ideal for the couple who like the idea of a garden style wedding, but want the elegance of a more formal reception.  The South Loggia provides a gorgeous ceremony space depending on the time of day and the city view from the North Loggia makes this a winner for cocktail hour.

4. Gallery 1028

Located on Goose Island, this venue reflects the edgy feel of the surrounding neighborhood.  The exposed brick and wood beams give the space a rough, unfinished look that provides an interesting counterpoint to the elegance of the occasion.  The space is a blank canvas to design an event that reflects your own personal style. Saturday rentals run around $4500 and the space comes as a “raw loft” so all the décor etc you see on the website will need to be provided.

5. Patrick C. Haley Mansion

Patrick C. Haley Mansion

The Haley Mansion is possibly one of the Chicago area’s most romantic settings. Everything about the place seems designed for weddings. The Victorian Gardens feature a paved aisle and a white pergola that perfectly frames the wedding couple.  Those who prefer an indoor ceremony will find the conservatory space a lovely alternative to the garden.  The ballroom can comfortably accommodate up to 600 guests. The space is incredibly lush feeling with crystal chandeliers, damask table coverings and 14kt gold place settings. Another plus, you and your bridal party will have the run of the mansion on your day. Despite the luxe settings, the mansion remains one of the most affordable options in the area.

Makeup Tips for Destination Weddings

Makeup for Destination Weddings

So you and your intended have decided to leave behind the Chicago cold and get married surrounded by palm trees and sandy beaches. I do NOT blame you a bit. Brides and grooms are choosing to ditch the big shiny wedding for something more intimate. Destination weddings do pose a few challenges; one of the big ones is how to handle your hair and makeup in Cozumel if you leave your makeup artist in Chicago. Here are some tips to make sure you look amazing one your wedding day whether it in downtown Chicago or on the beaches of Maui.

1. Take a lesson
If you’re not a daily makeup wearer, or want to do something tricky like false eyelashes, a makeup artist can give you lessons before you leave. This is probably best done in the privacy of your home rather than the mall. Do you REALLY want 50 people gawking as you try not to glue your eyes closed with eyelash adhesive? Most makeup artist (including yours truly) offer this service and will provide you with a shopping list and application chart to take on your trip.
2. Consider the climate
The foundation that gives you a dewy glow in the Chicago wind and cold might leave you a greasy mess in the Florida sunshine. Stick with matte or demi matte finished products. Long-wearing products like Estee Lauder Doublewear , MAC Prolongwear and Revlon Colorstay may be good options.
3. Take care of the skin you’re in.
If you have a skin flare up , you won’t have a makeup artist on hand with a whole kit of tricks to hide it, so make SURE that you really take the best care of your skin you can for the months leading up to your wedding. Removing makeup, exfoliating periodically and providing skin with adequate moisture are key.
4. Keep it Simple
This would not be the time to attempt to learn every trick in the book. I suggest changing no more than two or three things in your regular routine. For example, if you wear makeup every day, maybe and more full coverage foundation and false lashes will be enough to make you look extra special. If you never wear makeup, mascara, powder and a colored gloss are probably great things to add color and freshness without being too difficult to manage alone.
5. Hire locally
Odds are if you’re planning a destination wedding, someone with whom you’re working in the location has a lead on a great makeup artist. Get references and speak with the artist to make sure it’s a good fit. Since you won’t have the luxury of a run through before.
